(xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh), Vancouver, British Columbia – The First Nations Summit is sending congratulations to the Blueberry River First Nations, Doig River First Nation, Halfway River First Nation, Saulteau First Nation, and the West Moberly First Nation regarding the April 15, 2023 announcement that they have reached a final agreement with BC and Canada on their Treaty Land Entitlement claims. These agreements will undoubtedly lead to economic prosperity for the Northeast region of BC.
This agreement is long overdue. We commend the Treaty 8 Nations’ leadership and community members for their steadfast perseverance to ensure that they received the land and compensation due to their communities for more than 100 years since the original signing of the Treaty 8 agreement in 1899. No First Nation should have to wait 100+ years for governments to live up to obligations in historic treaty agreements.
